July 16th, 2010

For kids with sensory disorders, finding clothing that is comfortable can be difficult. A new

with silk thread, wide collars for a roomy fit, encased elastic waistbands that don’t pinch, and
printed labels that don’t itch. If you are caring for a child with hypersensitivity to touch, check out

Parenting Tips To Reduce Lying Behavior:

July 16th, 2010

When you sense your child/teen is beginning to stray from the truth, stop them.

“I want you to stop talking for a minute.” Sometimes kids just get started and can’t stop. Parents can help guide them away from telling a lie. “Think for a minute and then start again. I’d like to hear the things you know separated from the things you think.” “Start again and tell me how it really happened. Just the parts you are sure of.”

If a child responds properly to correction, avoid punishment.

This is especially helpful when trying to break the cycle of lying for a child. “If you can admit it was a lie and that you were wrong when I confront you, I will not further discipline you for that lie.” This is a temporary approach to teach a proper response to correction.

The safest way to dispose of your drugs is to use a medication take-back program. There are several of these programs throughout Wisconsin and many of these are listed on a website managed by the University of Wisconsin Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center. There may be another program in Wisconsin that is convenient for you. If you are unable to attend a take-back event, then dispose of your medications as recommended by the FDA and the drug manufacturer or go to www.MedDropDane.org for more information.

Wisconsin Youth Advisory Councils (YAC)

April 21st, 2010

In 2007, the Wisconsin Youth Advisory Council was formed to inspire change in foster care policy and practice. By providing education, advocacy, support, training, and awareness to governmental systems and the general public, YAC hopes to better the image of youth, and address the issues on behalf of current and former youth in foster care throughout Wisconsin.

The council meets quarterly to go over business and information regarding foster youth in our state. To learn more about the purpose, vision and mission of this important council, visit their website, www.wi-yac.org. While you are there, click on “Events” to view the video that the Wisconsin YAC created regarding issues dealing with foster youth.
