Resources to help you learn what it’s like to be a foster parent

Our goal at Family Works is to equip our foster families and staff with the tools necessary to effectively support our youth in care. This series will feature a variety of resources we have found helpful on topics applicable to parenting and foster care.

Are you considering becoming a foster parent but are unsure about what it means to care for youth who are in the foster care system. We’ve compiled the following resources to help give you an accurate overview of foster care.

Hear firsthand from foster parents about their lives and experiences. Learn about state rules and regulations. Use these resources to glean a realistic perspective on foster care that will help you to decide if being a foster parent is right for you.

You can use this as a guide to learning more generally about foster care.

 

Resources related to what it is like to be a foster parent

Removed (videos): Narrated from the perspective of a child in foster care, these videos give insight into what children in foster care have experienced prior to coming to your home. This young girl’s story gives perspective to how healing is a journey facilitated by caring adults who stick in it with children.

Another Place at the Table by Kathy Harrison: This book features a foster mother who narrates her journey through caring for a variety of youth in her home. Her account is an honest and realistic example of the highs and lows of being a foster parent.

 

“Foster Care Firsts: What Your Journey May Include” Tip Sheet from the Coalition for Children, Youth, and Families: This handout also provides insider insights to “firsts” many foster parents experience. We especially like the steps for how to move forward after experiencing new challenges.
